As soon as the lattes turn pumpkin, I become a witch.
Or, I want to be anyway. The magic, the hair, the Stevie Nicks black-dress-billowing of it all. I’m personally not sure there’s anything more romantic in the entire world than being unabashedly yourself and swirling in the creativity and magic of your own making.
Words are magic. I mean, duh. Obviously.
Anyway - fall is here, the sweet spices are in the drinks, leaves are falling, and I’m a bookish witch. As such, I’ve collected my favorite rom-com and family drama witchy reads for you, you little magical beings.
The Kiss Curse, Erin Sterling | Bookshop
I read The Hex Ex last fall and enjoyed it, so I was delighted to see the next installment of these crazy gals. Gwyn is coming into her own as a witch - she’s in a new coven with her cousin and mother and she’s a mentor to younger witches in town. Even her witchcraft shop is *ahem* killing it. But then - another Penhallow comes to town, because of course. Llewellyn looks to reconnect with his family’s wizarding legacy and of course, because he thought he could do it better than a woman, he sets up shop right across the street. Of course.
Mid-business battle more witches come to town and they don’t have the best intentions. Gwyn and Llewellyn must figure out what they are after before everyone goes up in flames.
Enchanted to Meet You, Meg Cabot | Bookshop
I’m a Swiftie. I feel like it’s obvious at this point. Of course, I was drawn to a purple book cover in Speak Now TV colors with beautiful loopy font all but singing the book’s title, which also happens to come from one of Taylor’s most fan-beloved songs. Jessica cast a spell that went so south that she got herself a lifetime ban from practicing witchcraft. Jessica leaves her teenage shenanigans behind, grows up, and stays adjacent to the magical world by owning a boutique that is a favorite of the hot-to-trot witches in society. Oh, and by the way, she’s not only still magical, but also The Chosen One? And there’s a man? A hot, hot man? It kind of sounds like a Taylor Swift song to me…
The Witches of New York, Ami McKay | Bookshop
This was on my TBR for way too long. Beatrice has no idea that she’s special, yet she’s called to answer an employment ad to be a shop girl at a teashop called Tea and Sympathy. Owners Adelaide and Eleanor recognize one of their own and take her under their tutelage. It’s a story of women staking a claim using their finest tools - themselves.
Improbable Magic for Cynical Witches, Kate Scelsa | Bookshop
I was obsessed with this one. It’s witchy, atmospheric, and a young adult offering for the youngest witches among us. Eleanor’s lost her dream girl and has sworn off romance. Magic doesn’t exist. Love doesn’t exist.
Then a tarot card shows up at the shop where Eleanor works. The card is quickly followed by Pix who introduces Eleanor to her coven and maybe even a new kind of magic.
The Nature of Witches, Rachel Griffin | Bookshop
This is my favorite book on this list. Reading it was as crisp as spiked cider, and I felt about as warm inside when I was done. Clara is a witch who lives in a world where witches control the climate. Everyone is born assigned to a season, and their season is where they thrive the most. The problem: the earth is warming. The climate is becoming unpredictable. And there’s only one witch who can control all the seasons. Guess who? Clara.
To add layers of problems, Clara doesn’t much love being magical. Her magic hurts the people she loves the most by accident. As Earth needs her more and more, Clara retreats in fear of hurting yet another person she loves, and she’s forced to choose who and what matters the most.
Practical Magic, Alice Hoffman | Bookshop

Come on. This list isn’t complete without the Owens sisters. I mean.
Happy fall, bookish witches and boring humans alike. Use that magic to do a little good today, eh?
Or create some chaos. You do you.
In witchy wonder,
Steph
